A slight misunderstanding while traveling in America.
by Steve Braithwaite |
When I first went to America and did some traveling I was something of a “fish out of water” as we all are when exploring a strange new land, and of course I made a few mistakes.
This is one of them.
In England, where I’m from, the big roads that crisscross the country moving motorists rapidly from place to place are called Motorways and they are individually called the M1 or M25 etc. The M standing for Motorway of course.
In America they are called “Interstates” and get abbreviated to I-95 pronounced “eye ninety five”.
I spent a night in Flint Michigan and the following day wanted to drive to Canada.
Now, if you look at a map you will see that the road I wanted was Interstate 69. I didn’t look at a map however. I simply went to the front desk of the hotel I was staying in and asked the guy behind the counter “Please can you tell me how I get to Canada from here?”
He looked at me and said “Well, you know I-69”
I was a bit shocked and answered “No! I didn't know, and quite frankly I didn't want to know. That’s something you should probably keep to yourself”
